If you want to sort out your social media for your business, the absolute first step is auditing what you already have. Once you know what channels you have, then you know what you’re working with.
You may have been one of those super-organised people who set-up all your accounts in one day, in a timely and orderly fashion and you know exactly where all your accounts are at. Or, like the rest of us, you set up each account on the fly, whenever you had a spare minute and because it seemed like a good idea at the time.
That’s totally fine, we’ve all done it, but after a while we start to forget what we have going on and where everything is at. You cannot make a good social media strategy if you don’t already know what you have to work with, so let’s audit!
Carve out some time because you’ll need about 30 minutes to get this done. Get in front of your computer and gather all the other devices you use too, have them right beside you, phone, tablet, laptop, etc. Now it’s time we make the list.
Start with your computer and get down every account you have. Check Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Google Plus, etc, leave no stone left unturned. Remember that you might even have two or three accounts on the same channel, get all those down onto the list too. List the personal accounts you have and the business ones, let’s get them all down and accounted for.
Sometimes only certain accounts are logged into on certain devices, so you need to go through your phone/tablet/laptop too and check all the social media apps you have for any accounts you’ve got going on there too. Keep adding everything you find to the list.
Once you’re done, you now know exactly where you stand. Small warning, it could be a little overwhelming to see how many channels you have accounts on, but rest assured, once you know what you’re working with, it’s way easier to focus on what you want and to manage them all.
